Privately printed souvenir postcards became very popular after the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago distributed them with photos of the buildings. By 1908 more than 600 million postcards were being mailed in the United States annually. Many of the colorized postcards of Ipswich were created from photos taken by George Dexter, Edward Darling and Arthur Wesley Dow in the late 19th and early 20th Century.
