London Letters Home
This talk and slide show by Penny West, author of “London Letters Home” will present a glimpse of four years in the life of Gus Farley, of the Ipswich Farleys. He shipped to London as a teenager, apprenticing as a tea taster, preparing to join his cousins’ firm of Augustine Heard & Co. from China – 1861-1865. Gus’ letters describe the daily workings of the mid-19th century tea business in London, the different political perspective of the English about the American Civil War, and hint at his coming of age there.
Penny Pelham West has been interest in history and her New England family roots since her college days. Her book, London Letters Home is based on 90 letters written by Gustavus Farley Jr. between Sept. 1861 and Jan. 1865, plus several letters from family members.
Please contact Gordon Harris at email@example.com if you are interested in presenting in the fall and winter Lyceum series.
